2018 will be a year of significant change in the United Methodist Church. After years of discussions, committees, and councils, contemplating the need for changes in the current Book of Discipline regarding human sexuality, particularly in areas of leadership, our General Conference will come closer to voting on whether or not to change the language in the Book of Discipline. We have watched as other denominations have separated, new ones have been created, or even non-denominational churches have formed over this issue and others. Regardless of the decision made by the General Conference, after the vote which will be held in February 2019, some things will be different in the denominational context. But what does all of that mean for us, the local church, the community of Southside UMC?
Pastor Bruce reminds us that regardless of what happens in our denomination, The United Methodist Church, we are, as individuals and as a church family, called to be a church of Jesus Christ. This year, we are going to step into this calling in even more profound ways; we are going to make an impact through missions. We will do this as we continue our local partnerships with schools, other churches, and community organizations.
We will continue to support our brothers and sisters in Christ who serve our United Methodist Children's Home, and Madison Youth Ranch. Our people will still travel to Puerto Rico, Cuba, and other places where God calls them to serve in mission. But we will do more.
We believe that, even in the midst of uncertainties surrounding the future, there is a certainty in God's plan and his purpose for us:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”(Matt. 28:18-20)
We cannot let the climate control us; we control the climate. Southside is and will continue to be, a church who strives to listen to God's call on our lives, our decisions, our path. We are a church who prays together, discerns together, and moves forward in mission together. And this will not change.
We are on a mission to build the family of God into faithful disciples of Jesus Christ to reach the world.
We invite you to pray with us and join together in our mission to serve Christ in mission in 2018 and beyond. May the story that is told about one of hope, unity, and peace, regardless of the headlines.
